Welcome to the Indiana Data Tracker

Citizen-activated transparency in government

The Indiana Data Tracker is a project of Indiana Coalition for Open Government, a nonprofit organization that promotes transparency at all levels of government in Indiana. This site makes it possible for the public to both discover and contribute knowledge about data (that is, metadata) maintained by government agencies.

By crowd-sourcing the information on the site, we aim to provide a constantly growing catalog of public data sets, whether they are available online or housed on internal government computers. The ultimate goal is to create a powerful tool for public accountability of Indiana government agencies. Only when citizens are aware of the kinds of information maintained by public officials can they request and use that information to evaluate the performance of the agencies created to serve them.

Members of the public are invited to search and browse the metadata collected here as well as submit information about data sets that aren’t here yet. The greater the participation, the more robust this resource will be, so please join us!

About Access to Public Data in Indiana

Under Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act, all persons are entitled to obtain information about the acts of government and government representatives at all levels, from the governor’s office all the way down to township trustees. Under the law, the public can request, and agencies must provide (with some exceptions), copies of public records such as reports, recordings, maps and yes, electronically-stored data.

How to submit a request for data from an agency

While state law does not require agencies to have websites, most do, and they often post data sets or information about available data sets. This site is designed to catalog information about those data sets at all levels of government in Indiana to make accessing them easier for the public. If a data set is not online or is only partially available online, the public can request release of the full data by submitting a request under APRA. Here is a guide to filing a public records request.
